LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
June went out in a blaze of glory when the mercury soared past 100 degrees across most of east Kentucky establishing new all-time record highs at both the London-Corbin Airport and the National Weather Service in Jackson, according to the NWS.
At the London-Corbin Airport, where records began in 1954, the temperature climbed to 105 degrees on Friday. This temperature obliterated the old daily record for June 29 of 93 degrees set in 1988. The previous all-time record high at London was 102 degrees set on August 16, 2007. This easily shattered many records, including daily, monthly, and seasonal. Additional maximum temperature records included 98 degrees on the 28th and 104 degrees on the 30th. Also, 94 degrees on the 24th tied the record for that day as well.
At Jackson, the temperature climbed to 104 degrees on Friday. This temperature obliterated the old daily record for June 29 of 92 degrees set in 1988 and established a new all-time record high for the station as well. The previous all-time record high at Jackson was 101 degrees set last on August 18, 1988. Climate records at NWS Jackson date back to 1981.
Extremely dry conditions also continue to plague the region. The London-Corbin Airport saw a little more than a third of an inch of rain, making June the driest month on record, 4.03 inches below normal. June 2012 easily beat the record of June 1980 at 0.71 inches. June 2012 was also the third driest month ever, only behind two Octobers, 0.02 inches of 1963 and the 0.10 inches from 1987.
The annual precipitation total through the end of June is 18.71 inches, which is 6.36 inches below normal for the year.
