LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an apparent phone scam reported to them Tuesday afternoon.

According to sheriff’s reports, a London man received a phone call from area code 011, which denotes an out-of-country call. The caller told him he had won a $100 gift card. The caller said they needed a credit card number to pay for a processing fee of $4.95.

This is a scam and the sheriff’s office warns Laurel Countians to beware and to not answer calls from similar numbers.  If the call is accidentally answered, deputies suggest hanging up immediately.

There are many variations of scams circulating. The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office warns that if a caller asks for personal or financial data, it could be a scam and it’s best to disregard these calls.

Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Sgt. E.R. Rudder is continuing the investigation.
