LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
A minor traffic accident ended with a Laurel teen jailed on numerous charges, including hit-and-run.
James D. Steele, 19, of 708 Rita Lane, is free on a $2,500 surety bond but faces a court hearing on May 13 for an accident occurring on Thursday afternoon.
According to the report by the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, Steele was backing out of a driveway onto Rita Lane when his blue Volvo hit a silver Dodge Caravan that was traveling along the roadway, causing some property damage.
Steele then fled the scene without stopping to check with the occupants of the van for injuries or damages. He then drove to Dow Adkins Lane, approximately two miles away, abandoned the vehicle and tried to hide behind a burned house.
Deputies Larry Parrott and Milton Storm went to the scene of the accident, then followed information to locate the driver of the Volvo. After finding the vehicle, deputies impounded it and continued their search for the driver, who was located at a nearby residence.
Steele was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, failure to maintain required insurance, failure to register transfer of a motor vehicle, improper registration plates, and other traffic violations. The vehicle reportedly had license plates on it that were registered to another vehicle.
