Fight on Memory Lane leads to shooting, 2 flown to UK

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — An argument between two men sent two persons to a Lexington hospital for injuries resulting from the altercation.

A press release from the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office indicates that 48-year-old Paul Wagers of Memory Lane in London was arguing with his stepfather, Alton Smith, around midnight Saturday at the Memory Lane residence, seven miles east of London, off Bob Deaton Road.

When Deputies Shawn Boroviak and Josh Scott arrived at the scene where reports of shots being fired, they had to break up an active physical fight between the two men. The deputies learned that both men had previously fired shots at one another, with Wagers’ mother being shot in the hand when she intervened in the argument.

Wagers was arrested and charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest and alcohol intoxication in a public place. Alton Smith and his wife, Ethelene Smith, were both airlifted from the scene for injuries-- Alton Smith for head and face injuries and Ethelene Smith for a gunshot wound to the hand.

The cause of the argument is unknown, according to a press release from the Laurel Sheriff’s Office, but the investigation is being continued by Laurel Sheriff’s Detective Daryl Zanet. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident.

Assisting at the scene were Chief Deputy Eddy Sizemore, Sgt. E. R. Rudder, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County and Bush Volunteer Fire Department.
