LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Nearly nine months ago, Sara Lee Bakery, at 1331 N. Main St. in London, along with all of the corporation’s North American Bakery businesses were purchased by Grupo Bimbo, a company based out of Mexico. Just a week ago, the local bakery, which was previously owned by Earthgrains Baking Company, changed their signage.
Grupo is best known in the U.S. for its subsidiary, Bimbo Bakeries USA, who offers brands such as Thomas (English muffins, bagels) and Arnold (bread, buns). Bimbo Bakeries already had a base in the northeast and Texas and with the purchase of Sara Lee’s North American Fresh Bakery unit, has expanded into the midwest and southeast.
“We will soon be able to begin the important work of creating the new BBU,” said Gary Prince, president of BBU in a press release following the sale.
According to BBU, over the next five years they are expecting to invest more than $1 billion to promote growth by creating efficient manufacturing and delivery services.
“We will build new bakeries where we need them, renew existing facilities and improve our technology and infrastructure,” Prince said. “Our investments will create manufacturing jobs in the U.S.”
No changes were made at the London bakery. The employees and local management remain the same. The plant manager is Mike Hackney.
Grupo Bimbo is one of the largest baking companies in the world, with 102 plants and 1,000 distribution centers located in 17 countries throughout the Americas and Asia.
