LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
A second fatal vehicle accident in one week occurred Friday when a London man was killed after he swerved to avoid an accident and struck an earth embankment of a creek on Ky. 1006.
Daniel R. Clontz, 41, of Chips Lane was pronounced dead at Saint Joseph London after a crash at the intersection of Hicks Lane and Ky. 1006 (Old Whitley Road) at 11 a.m.
According to a press release from the London Police Department, Clontz was traveling east on Ky. 1006. He topped a hill and ran upon stopped traffic at the intersection. In an attempt to avoid an accident, he swerved to the right, causing him to leave the roadway and strike an earth embankment.
Clontz was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. He was treated at the scene and transported to Saint Joseph London, where he was pronounced dead by Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling.
Sgt. Matthew Moore investigated the accident. He was assisted at the scene by Officers Mike Holliday, Shannon Morgan and Eric Stallard, as well as Bald Rock Fire Fighter Joey McIntosh, London Fire Department, London-Laurel County Rescue Squad and Laurel County EMS.
Clontz is the eighth victim of a traffic fatality in 2013 and the second traffic fatality last week.
On Tuesday, June 11, a Laurel County man was killed in a motorcycle accident on Anders Road.
Previous fatalities occurred in January, February, March and April.
