LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A motorcycle crash Friday afternoon took the life of a London man, the fifth traffic fatality in Laurel County since Nov. 20.
Laurel County Sheriff’s Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter is investigating a single-vehicle traffic crash which occurred at 2:47 p.m. on Ky. 229, one mile south of London near the intersection of Hideaway Road.
According to the sheriff’s report, Curtis G. Smith, 41, of Rocky Branch Road, was traveling northbound on Ky. 229 on a Suzuki motorcycle when he lost control in a curve, ran off the road, and was ejected from the motorcycle.
Smith received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling.
He was an employee of Hearthside Food Solutions (Laurel Cookie Factory).
This is Laurel County’s 17th traffic fatality the year, more than doubling the numbers from 2011.
This is the fifth traffic fatality in Laurel County in less than six weeks.
Assisting in the investigation were Laurel County Deputy Robbie Grimes, Deputy Josh Scott, Constable Tim May, London Police Officer Jason Borman, London Laurel Rescue Squad, Ambulance Inc. Of Laurel County, and Laurel County EMS.
