LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
A former Manchester doctor who resides in London was sentenced to 18 years in prison in U.S. District Court on Thursday.
Kismore Kumar Jadhav, 51, appeared for his sentencing hearing before Judge Gregory Van Tatenhoven as both the defense and prosecuting attorneys respectively argued for greater and lesser penalties for Jadhav’s crimes of child pornography.
Jadhav was arrested in April last year and indicted in May. He was charged with paying a teenage girl to perform sexual acts while he taped the incident. Jadhav pled guilty to the charges last fall and was required to pay restitution and forfeit assets that included a 2009 Cadillac CTS-V and some equipment from his Manchester office where other child pornography was found during a search of his personal effects by federal officials.
During Thursday’s sentencing, Jadhav’s attorney Richard A. Plymale, argued for a lesser sentence, while U.S. District Attorney Jason Denney pushed for the maximum sentence of 30 years “to protect society.”
Plymale, however, said that Jadhav was self-medicating with Wellbutrin and testosterone in addition to going through a mid-life crisis and a dormant bipolar disorder. Those factors, he said, were contributed to Jadhav’s behavior, before citing Jadhav’s positive contributions to the community.
Denney countered Plymale’s statements, saying that the complexity of Jadhav’s scheme, the number of victims and the length of time involved, were indicators that Jadhav should serve at least 24 years in prison.
Van Tatenhoven said Jadhav “took the wrong path, made the wrong choice” and said the pre-sentencing investigation recommended that Jadhav serve a life sentence of 30 years.
Although Van Tatenhoven said Jadhav seemed remorseful and regretted what happened, he added, “The truth is what stopped you was getting caught.....It was a complex scheme contrived to seek the gratificatoin you were seeking.”
Once released from prison, Jadhav must register as a sexual offender. He will have to undergo mental health and sex offender treatment, submit to random polygraph tests and can never be in places around children. In addition, he was ordered to pay $105,100 in fines and restitution.
