LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A man who was walking along a winding country road was injured when he was struck by a vehicle.

Mark Wagers, 53, of Wildwood Apartments in London, was reportedly walking along Ky. 1223, nine miles south of London, around 12:46 a.m. Saturday. Wagers was walking on the shoulder of the roadway when he was hit by a 1967 Chevrolet pickup, driven by 64-year-old Richard Peace of Corbin. Peace was traveling south on Ky. 1223 and hit Wagers, who was walking on  the southbound shoulder.

Wagers suffered multiple facial fractures and a fracture to the left leg. He was taken to Baptist Healthcare Corbin by Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, but was later airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. As of Monday, neither the UK Medical Center nor Baptist Healthcare Lexington listed Wagers as a patient.

Peace, however, is still listed as an inmate in the Laurel County Detention Center, where he is charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcoholic beverages and second-degree assault. Jail records indicate Peace is being held under a $25,000 fully secured bond and is set for a preliminary hearing in Laurel District Court on May 7.

Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Mickey Ashurst responded to the scene and was assisted by Kentucky State Police Trooper Mike Hamblin.
