2nd Sunday moves to Levi Jackson

Laurel County residents can join people throughout Kentucky Sunday during the Second Sunday event sponsored by the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extensive Service.

After being downtown last year, Second Sunday in Laurel County is moving to Levi Jackson Wilderness Road State Park. According to Judy O’Bryan, Laurel County Extension agent for family and consumer sciences, Levi Jackson is a better location all around for the event.

“We had tried to have it there last year, but were just weren’t able to do it,” O’Bryan said. “It’s a little easier location to corral the cars than downtown. Plus last year, a lot of the state parks participated, and the people at Levi Jackson really wanted to have it there this year.”

Second Sunday is a statewide event that encourages all forms of physical activity within the local community and is designed to get Kentuckians moving. Events are scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m.

O’Bryan said having events spread out around the park, rather than centered like last year at the courthouse, will also help promote the goal of getting people active.

“Last year, if you didn’t stay right at the courthouse, you were kind of excluded from a lot of the activities,” she said. “This year, there will be activities going on every step along the way.”

O’Bryan said designated check-in stations will be at McHargue’s Mill and at the intersection of the main road and the museum road.

“People should be sure to come up to the old playground area, where the circle is, because we will be having giveaways and prizes,” O’Bryan said. “When they check in, there will be maps available with all the activities listed.”

Scheduled activities include:

• Bicycle Rodeo sponsored by 4H from 2 to 4 p.m.

• Station Walk sponsored by POWERHOUSE.

• Rock Wall sponsored by Kentucky National Guard from 2 to 6 p.m.

• Inflatable Bounce House sponsored by the Laurel County Health Department and St. Joseph-London.

• Cornhole sponsored by HSBC and Body Recall.

• Square dancing and line dancing sponsored by Dudes and Dolls from 2 to 3 p.m.

• Pedal Tractor Pull sponsored by Southeast Kentucky Antique Gas Engine and Tractor Association and London Farm Service.

• Fitness exercises
