Volunteers make Mission Possible in London
Putting faith in action was the goal for 11 volunteers from Virginia, helpers who were in London to do good works last week.
The First United Methodist Church hosted the Mission Possible work camp, which has volunteers working on high priority home improvement and repair projects.
“We try to focus on the elderly and people with low incomes and the disabled,” Pastor Wade Arp said when asked who the program serves.
As such, the group built a wheelchair ramp for a Pittsburg couple, painted the women’s dorm at the Christian Shelter for the Homeless, painted at Come-Unity Cooperative Care and completed repair work at the Bennett Center administration building.
Though rainy weather delayed some of the projects, volunteers were pleased with their progress — and the work itself.
“It’s great,” Rodger Propst said. “It’s great working with these guys and doing the good for these people. It’s satisfying.”
Bill Hepler agreed.
“It’s satisfying knowing that somebody will benefit from the effort and their life will be a little less restricted,” he said. “We feel very sincerely it’s what God would have us do.”
After work, the group of volunteers stayed in dorms at the Bennett Center and dined in the former college cafeteria each night. After dinner, the group would head out to indulge in a Dairy Queen frozen treat.
“We don’t have one where we are,” Probst said, adding his town has a population of 200. “This (London) would a New York City compared to Highland County.”
The group said they enjoyed their stay in London.
“The people were very, very nice,” Karen Brower said. “Everyone has been so nice and appreciative.”
