An SUV caught on fire while its driver was trapped inside after a wreck on west KY 80 Tuesday afternoon.
Timothy Jarvis, of London, was not burned but was taken to Saint Joseph-London for treatment, London Police Sgt. Joe Smith said. He was later taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
The accident happened about 12:30 p.m. when Robert Ridings, driving a maroon 1995 Ford Explorer, pulled out onto west KY 80 from Shiloh Drive into Jarvis’ path. Jarvis, who was driving a 1994 Chevy Blazer, was driving west on the highway toward Somerset.
The Blazer T-boned the Explorer, a collision that trapped Jarvis. It also started a small fire in the Blazer’s engine.
“It was a relatively small fire under the hood and it was immediately contained,” Smith said.
Jarvis was extricated from his SUV by members of the London-Laurel County Rescue Squad.
Ridings, along with his passenger Kathy Ridings, were both injured and were flown out to University of Kentucky Medical Center after a LifeNet helicopter landed in Cracker Barrell’s parking lot.
The Ridings and Jarvis are all in stable condition.
Everyone involved was wearing seat belts. Neither drugs nor alcohol is suspected.
Smith was assisted at the scene by Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, the London-Laurel County Rescue Squad and LifeNet.
