LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
It was a close call for both a semi driver and wrecker crews after a one-vehicle accident on U.S. 25 in Lily on Monday.
Travelers along the roadway were delayed or detoured for nearly two hours Monday afternoon as wrecker crews tried to remove a fully loaded semi truck carrying coal.
The accident occurred when 43-year-old Larry Fields of Castlewood, Va., was heading north on U.S. 25 around 1 p.m. According to a press release from the Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement office, Fields lost control of his 2012 International coal truck and ran off the road and into a ditch line, nearly causing the truck to overturn.
Although Fields escaped without injury, road crews coming to assist were faced with how to remove the truck without causing the truck to overturn or how to get the truck back on the roadway without dumping coal all along the roadway.
While wreck crews dealt with that dilemma, the northbound lane had to be closed for nearly two hours.
Law enforcement personnel do not believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident, and Fields was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
The accident is being investigated by KSP-CVE Officer Joey Ray Caldwell. He was assisted at the scene by members of the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, the Lily Volunteer Fire Department and Laurel County Emergency Management.
