Couple pleads in child abuse case

A Laurel couple charged with sexually abusing a teenage girl are set for sentencing in December.

Dustin Brummett, 26, and his wife, 38-year-old Charlene Brummett, both of 1600 Laurel River Road in London, entered guilty pleas to the sexual abuse of a 17-year-old girl that occurred on several occasions between June 1 and Oct. 26 of last year.

Dustin Brummett pled guilty to two counts of third-degree sodomy and one count of incest in the case, as well as one count of distribution of obscene material to a minor. He was recommended to serve a total of 20 years in prison and is set for sentencing on Dec. 20 in Laurel Circuit Court.

Charlene Brummett was recommended to serve six years in prison on two counts of third-degree complicity to commit sodomy, with those two sentences running consecutively, or one after the other. She is also set for sentencing on Dec. 20.

The pleas were entered before Laurel Circuit Judge Tom Jensen on Oct. 3. The Brummetts were originally named in a 15-count indictment in December of last year after it was discovered the couple were forcing a 17-year-old to have sexual relations with Dustin Brummett.

Dustin Brummett was facing four counts of first-degree rape, two counts of third-degree sodomy, one count of incest, and one count of distributing obscene material to a minor. The rape charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 to 20 years each, while the sodomy charge is a 1 to 5 year sentence. Incest has somewhat harsher penalties, with a 10 to 20 year maximum sentence. Distribution of obscene material to a minor has a 12 month sentence with up to $500 fine.

Charlene Brummett was indicted on four counts of first-degree complicity to commit rape, two counts of complicity to commit third-degree sodomy, and one count of complicity to commit incest. She also could have faced extensive prison time, with the complicity charges on rape carrying a 10 to 20 year sentence, a 10 to 20 year sentence for the complicity to commit incest and a 1 to 5 year sentence for the conspiracy to commit sodomy.
