LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
“We use every opportunity to make our city safer,” said Mayor Troy Rudder, referring to the $5,895 safety grant the city of London was recently awarded by the Kentucky League of Cities Insurance Services (KLCIS).
The grant will be used to purchase the following safety items for city employees’ safety: Steel toed safety boots for street and sanitation employees, high-visibility safety vests for employee safety in the street and sanitation department while working near the highways and streets, hard hats and safety glasses for employee protection in the street and sanitation department, nightstick traffic safety lights with cones for the London Police Department to use for safe traffic control at night, high-visibility winter bomber jackets with zip out liners for the street and sanitation department when they work outside in the winter, and high-visibility durable rain suits for sanitation loaders working in inclement weather.
Mayor Rudder said “in these uncertain times, grants such as this one are a practical way to make the city’s budget go further, as well as provide products and training that will enhance public safety.”
KLCIS helps members increase public safety with a number of proactive programs and services.
The Kentucky League of Cities has awarded in excess of $3.2 million since the Safety Grant Program started in 1999. In addition to London, 114 other KLCIS member cities received safety grants. A total of $440,000 was awarded in this year’s program. The awarded funds will go toward training, slip resistant shoes, sidewalk repairs, confined space equipment, law enforcement accreditation fees, and other equipment to improve public and employee safety, as well as to purchase training classes through KLCIS Online University.
“Our philosophy is to prevent injuries and claims from happening,” said Jon Steiner, executive director/CEO. “We want to partner with our members, and this safety grant promotes good risk management. There is no better way to invest our members’ money.”
KLCIS provides safety grants to its members annually. As Kentucky’s largest municipal insurance program, KLCIS provides a full range of affordable liability, property, worker’s compensation and other products to municipalities. In addition, the Kentucky League of Cities offers employee benefits programs, financial services, training and education, policy and development, legislative advocacy, information technology and legal services.
