LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A woman who left her two children and reportedly went for a weekend  party with her boyfriend was indicted for abandoning her children.

Rachel E. Kilburn, 29, of 1925 Highway 1956 in London, was named in a two-count indictment for abandonment of a minor on Aug. 25.

Kilburn reportedly left her 2-year-old son and 10-week-old daughter with her boyfriend’s grandfather and brother. Kilburn and her boyfriend, Johnathon Haynes, allegedly told Haynes’ grandfather that Kilburn’s oldest son had been involved in an accident and was hospitalized in Tennessee. Haynes’ grandfather said his grandson asked for $1,500 to pay on the child’s medical expenses and the couple were en route to the hospital that day. The infant girl and toddler boy were left with Haynes’ relatives.

On Monday, Aug. 25, Haynes returned to his grandfather’s home, again asking for money. According to the grandfather, Kilburn was not present either time the money was requested but did send a handwritten note.

On Monday evening, the brother went to check on the infant child who was in a bedroom in the residence and discovered she was not breathing. The grandfather said he performed CPR on the child while the brother called 9-1-1. EMTs responding to the scene were unsuccessful in reviving the child.

Later that night, Kilburn and Haynes were located and Haynes was charged with driving under the influence. Police investigating the case say Kilburn’s oldest son was never involved in an accident and never hospitalized. The couple are believed to have concocted the story to obtain money from the grandfather and are believed to have remained in the immediate London area over the weekend.

An indictment is an accusation only and does not imply guilt or innocence.
