LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
In a bizarre twist of fate, the man who shot another man, then sprawled in the victim’s floor in a drunken stupor, was indicted by a Laurel grand jury on Friday.
Michael W. Whitehead, 64, of 312 Earl Howard Road in Keavy, is charged with first-degree assault against his neighbor, 61-year-old Everett Morgan, also of Earl Howard Road, on Aug. 10.
According to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, Morgan was at home on Aug. 10 when Whitehead reportedly went inside the home, located 12 miles south of London, and shot Morgan several times. Morgan called a neighbor to call 9-1-1. When law enforcement officials arrived on the scene, they found Morgan sitting on the couch, fully conscious, despite having been shot.
The shooter — Whitehead — however, was lying on the floor near Morgan, and a handgun was found nearby. Whitehead, according to officials, was highly intoxicated and semi-conscious.
Morgan was flown from the scene to the University of Kentucky Medical Center and was listed in critical condition due to his injuries.
An indictment is an accusation only and does not imply guilt or innocence.
