'Justice for Pam': Family of slain London woman picket court hearing

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Dozens of picketers stood outside the U.S. Federal Courthouse in London Monday morning as the man accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death in October 2012 appeared in L.C. Circuit Court.

Sean D. Messer, 35, was indicted in November for murder and first-degree fleeing or evading police stemming from the Oct. 22 death of his girlfriend, 25-year-old Pamela Bobbitt. She was stabbed in the back, chest, wrist and jaw multiple times. She was transported to Saint Joseph London, where she was pronounced dead.

She was the mother of four.

Members of Bobbitt’s family stood outside the courthouse holding picket signs with words like “murder” and “Justice for Pam.”  Shirley Philpot, Bobbitt’s mother-in-law, said they plan to protest during the entire trial, not only outside the courthouse, but also near the back entrance so that Messer sees them as he is escorted out of the courthouse.

Monday’s hearing was to determine whether or not the DNA evidence in the case is ready and to set a trial date for Messer.

“This is the male version of the Jodi Arias case,” Philpot said.  “He (Messer) is going to drag this out for as long as he can.  He wants the publicity.”

Philpot said they were not only protesting for Bobbitt, but for all domestic violence victims.  The protesters all wore purple; a choice Philpot said was made in support of domestic violence prevention.

During the hearing, a pre-trial date was set for October 31, and a trial date was set for November 12.

“I’m very relieved that we’re on our way to getting justice,” said Tonya Honeycutt, Bobbitt’s sister.  “I just hope he doesn’t take a deal.  I’m pretty confident though it will go to trial.  I hope that my sister, Pam, and her children get the justice they deserve.”

Messer remains in the Laurel County Detention Center under a $250,000 cash bond.
