LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
A London man was arrested Wednesday, after police executed a search warrant at his residence and found large quantities of methamphetamine, money, guns and stolen property.
Paul Thurmond, 37, of Parker Road in London. was charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, first offense — greater or equal to 2 grams of methamphetamine; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and receiving stolen property, a firearm.
Thurmond was also wanted in connection with drug and weapon charges in Georgia.
The search warrant was obtained as a result of an undercover drug operation conducted by the London Police Department. Thurmond sold the undercover officer more than 8 grams of meth, totaling $700, on two separate occasions.
“We want these drugs off our streets,” said Police Chief Stewart Walker. “These guys don’t understand, it’s not ‘if’ they get caught, it’s ‘when’ they get caught.”
Walker said he and detectives expected to find firearms and drugs on the property but were surprised at the large quantity they found.
“We knew he had weapons and crystal meth here on the property, we just had to find it,” Walker said.
Officers searched the property and found several items they suspected were stolen, including tools and fishing rods and reels. After further investigation, officers found two locked safes in a storage building with several firearms, including a Smith and Wesson .38 stub nose revolver; large quantities of meth and more than $6,800 cash.
“When we have a raid like this, we seize anything that we suspect is stolen or has been purchased or acquired from the illegal sale of drugs,” Walker said. “Since the accused doesn’t have a job or any other form of income, we can assume a lot of this property was acquired through drug money. If you sell in London, we’re going to take your property.”
Detectives Jimmy Phelps and Allen Harris led the investigation and were assisted by Officer Jacob Borman, Officer Jordan Hopkins, Sgt. Danny Robinson, Sgt. Richie Reynolds, Captain Darrel Kilburn, Major Derek House, Detective Gary Proffitt and Detective Joe Smith.
Thurmond was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled for arraignment on July 8 in Laurel County District Court.
