LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
With all the warm weather the past few months, the construction of East Bernstadt’s new elementary school is on schedule.
The kitchen and cafeteria will be completed by the beginning of school next August and the classroom building by August 2013.
Superintendent Homer Radford said everything should be completed by June 30, 2013 and then work on renovating the gym will begin.
Radford said the board previously approved a schematic design of a total of 35,000 to 36,000 square feet.
“That’s a 2.5 times more footage than we have now,” he said. “This building is built to accommodate the kids we have now. Our size is limited at this time. We’ll have bigger classrooms, more meeting area, more area for offices, two pre-school classrooms and 16 classrooms for kindergarten through fifth grade.”
The new elementary school will have everything under one roof so that the students will not have to go outside to get to other buildings.
At the school board meeting on February 9, the board approved partial payment to contractors for $570,582.67; $51,630.93 to Hacker Bros. for construction management services; and to architects Lucas-Schwering, $630,028.86.
Other business the board acted on included:
• Approved the second reading of board policy pertaining to baseball. “It would be up to the coach’s discretion as to whether a fifth grader should play on a big field or a smaller field,” Radford said.
• Approved an assurance for the Family Resource Youth Service Center to follow state guidelines.
• Radford informed the board he hired Scarlet Ledington to fill a fourth- and fifth-grade position.
• Approved a speech therapy contract with Linda Wilder for $50 a hour. “We have a speech teacher but we had a overflow of children who need speech therapy this semester,” Radford explained.
