17 vehicular fatalities in 2012

Only 8 died in 2011

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — There have been more vehicular fatalities in Laurel County in 2012 than in each of the previous seven years. They have more than doubled since 2011.

In 2012 there were 17 fatalities including one ATV, four motorcycles, and one involving a commercial vehicle. In 2011 there were only eight fatalities.

The reason for the increase in vehicular fatalities is a mixture of causes.

“Some are from speed, weather, some alcohol and drugs, and some inattention,” Laurel County Sheriff John Root. “It’s a mixture.

“We use federal funds to patrol, especially where fatals occur,” he added.
