South Laurel Lady Cardinals go 2-2 in Danville

Softball team plays in Boyle County Invitational

DANVILLE—The South Laurel Lady Cardinals finished 2-2 in the Boyle Co. Invitational softball tournament Friday and Saturday in Danville.

The Lady Cards beat Clark Co. 5-0 and Bullitt Central 17-1, but fell 3-0 to Garrard Co. and 6-5 to West Jessamine.

South Laurel faced Clark Co. in their first game Friday night, and behind pitcher Porsha Justice, blanked the Lady Cards, 5-0.

The Lady Cards struck for all five runs in the top of the first inning, then held off GRC the rest of the way.

Emily Gaines led off with a single to center, then scored when Lauren Wombles smacked a double. Wombles would come home on a single by Justice for a 2-0 lead.

Johnna Sizemore then walked, bringing Kelsey Jervis to the plate, and she singled to score Justice. A single by Taylor Martin brought Sizemore home, then Jervis scored on a single by Ashley Stock for the 5-0 lead.

The Lady Cards then faced Garrard Co. in their second game on Friday night, and fell 3-0 to a team they had beaten 7-2 earlier in the week. Destinee Fisher took the loss for South Laurel.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when Garrard Co. scored twice on a two-run homer by Speake. The Lady Lions added a third run in the sixth when Speake hit a solo homer to make the final 3-0.

Saturday morning saw South Laurel roll past Bullitt Central 17-1 as Emily Gaines picked up the win, throwing two innings, striking out four. Lauren Wombles then pitched the last three innings, striking out five.

South Laurel built a 9-0 lead going into the top of the fifth, then plated eight more runs to make the final 17-1.

Wombles had a two-rum homer in the first, and Gaines doubled in two runs in the second. Gaines had two doubles on the day and four RBIs. Wombles and Jervis also drove in four runs in the game. Jervis and Candace Kirby also smacked doubles in the rout as South Laurel banged out 17 hits.

The Lady Cards then faced West Jessamine, and fell 6-5 in eight innings. Justice took the loss for South Laurel.

West Jessamine took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but South came back to tie the game in the top of the second when Sizemore reached on an error, then scored on a single by Stock. Erica Burchett (running for Stock) scored when Jamie Wyatt stole second.

The Lady Colts regained the lead in the bottom of the second, then added another run in the fourth for a 4-2 lead. South Laurel tied the game in the top of the seventh as Wyatt walked and scored on a single by Morgan Johnson. Johnson would come home on a Justice single.

The international tiebreaker was then brought into play in the top of the eighth, as Burchett scored on a single by Stock for a 5-4 lead. But West Jessamine came back for two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 6-5 win.

South Laurel is now scheduled to host Knox Central Thursday night.
