Cards roll past Bulldogs, 9-0

South Laurel downs Hazard in boys' soccer

Johnathan McClure scored three goals, and Caleb Spencer added two as the South Laurel Cardinals downed visiting Hazard 9-0 on Saturday.

“I told the team at the half that we weren’t going to score over eight goals,” Coach Harmon Hodge said. “Justin (Lewis, who scored the ninth goal) is in trouble. I hate to run the score up. I’ve been on the other end, and nobody wins in that situation.”

The Cardinals dominated the action against the Bulldogs, who are a first year program. South built a 6-0 lead at the half, and in the second half, the Cardinals worked more on possession than looking for scoring opportunities.

Spencer got South Laurel on the board in the 7th minute when Spencer Hubbard took the ball down the right side, then sent a cross to Dustin Lawson, who laid the ball off for Spencer. Spencer fired a shot from about 25 yards out that beat the keeper to make it 1-0.

Three minutes later, Dylan Berry made it 2-0 when he blasted a shot from about 20 yards out. Spencer’s second goal came off an assist from Jeffrey Poston in the 15th minute as the lead grew to 3-0.

McClure then picked up his first two goals with a four-minute span (18’ and 22’) to up the lead to 5-0. Then in the 31st minute, Lawson sent a long ball that Poston ran onto and beat the keeper to make it 6-0.

McClure scored goals in the 41st and 49th minutes to make it 8-0. Then in the 64th minute, Luke McCowan passed the ball to Scotty Farthing, who then found Lewis making a run from the back. His shot beat the keeper to make the final 9-0.

“I was really proud of the way Scotty (Farthing) played,” Hodge said. “He earned himself some more playing time. Dusty Lawson also played well.”

The Cardinals hosted Pulaski County last night, then will travel to Oneida Baptist for a district match-up on Thursday.
