Farthing's goal lifts South over OBI, 2-1

Cardinals down Mountaineers in boys' soccer action

ONEIDA—A goal with 18 seconds left by Scotty Farthing lifted the South Laurel Cardinals to a 2-1 win over host Oneida Baptist Institute Thursday night in boys’ soccer.

“It wasn’t pretty,” Coach Harmon Hodge said. “We didn’t play well, but we got the job done.”

The Cards (6-1-2, 2-0-1) were without the services of Dylan Berry (sitting out his suspension for getting a red card against Pulaski Co.), and in this match, Johnathan McClure received two yellows, forcing him to sit for most of the game. Both players will miss Tuesday night’s match at No. 11 Lexington Christian.

Oneida Baptist (4-5-0, 1-2-0) got on the scoreboard first in the opening minute of play when a shot deflected off the knee of David Herron, and the dropped under the bar for a 1-0 Mountaineer lead.

“We had the sun in our fact the first half, and Tyler (Huff, South’s keeper) couldn’t see the ball,” Hodge said.

Jeffrey Poston tied the match at 1-1, then with 18 seconds left in the match, he sent a ball through to Farthing, who beat the keeper for the 2-1 win.

“It was an exciting game,” Hodge said. “And it was a big win, being a district game. It probably assures us at least a first place tie with Corbin. Oneida has a good team. They are big and play very physical. They worked the ball well, and are one of the most disciplined teams we’ve faced.”

The Cards travel to face Lexington Christian on Tuesday night.
