Win caps off long night for SL

Lady Cards take care of Jackson County in 3 sets

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — By the time Kaylee Norvell’s ace wrapped up South Laurel’s 25-21, 25-23, 25-19 win over Jackson County Tuesday night, the clock on the wall was nearing 10 p.m.

Both the freshmen and junior varsity matches went the full three sets, which meant the varsity match didn’t start until around 8:30 p.m.

The wait might have been long, and the hour late, but winning the match made the late hour a little more bearable.

“We had a lot of issues with sickness,” coach Fawn Greer said. “But we overcame that. We had to use a new setter (Kiersten Jackson) and the other girls weren’t used to her. But we need to learn to trust, and she did a great job.”

South Laurel never led in the first set until a kill by Taylor Arthur gave the Lady Cards a 20-19 lead. Before that, it was all Jackson County, with the Lady Generals holding a seven-point lead at one point (14-7).

But South’s front line of Arthur, Alyson Croley and C. J. Johnson stepped up late in the set to help the Lady Cards to victory. After South took the lead, Johnson would have two kills and Croley one, while Arthur took over serving at 22-21 and served out the set.

Set two was another close battle between the two teams with eight ties, some great court coverage by both teams, and some very long rallies, but in the end, South Laurel took the set, 25-23. The Lady Cards recorded five aces in the second set and only four serves gave Jackson County points.

“We served much better tonight,” Greer said.

South came out strong in the third set, wanting to end the match and see it go no longer. Four points and a kill by Arthur gave the Lady Cards an 11-3 lead. That lead grew to 22-9 before Jackson County started a comeback thanks to the serving of Rachel Hayes, who had three aces to cut the lead to 22-14. A kill by Sarah Gabbard brought the Lady Generals to within six, 22-16, forcing Greer to call a time out.

Out of the break, South managed to hold on for the 25-19 win.

“We had good court coverage tonight,” Greer said. “I would like to see better trust in our setter.”

South Laurel played host to Corbin in a big district battle on Thursday.
