District soccer, volleyball start tonight

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Corbin and South Laurel will be looking to defend district titles when the post season gets underway tonight in volleyball and boys’ and girls’ soccer.

The 50th District volleyball tournament will be held tonight at Corbin. The first match will feature North Laurel (17-16) taking on South Laurel (16-5) at 6 p.m., followed by the winner facing defending champion Corbin (25-8).

Last season Corbin beat North Laurel, 2-0, in the first game of the tournament, and then swept past South Laurel, 2-0, to claim the title.

South Laurel and North Laurel met twice this season, with the Lady Cardinals winning both by 3-1 scores, to stay unbeaten against their county rivals. South lost both meetings to Corbin, 3-2 and 3-0. North fell three times to the Lady Redhounds, 3-0, 2-1 and 3-1.

The girls’ 49th District soccer tournament also begins tonight at South Laurel with host and defending champion South Laurel taking on Whitley County at 6 p.m., followed by Corbin-North Laurel at 8 p.m. The championship will be Thursday at 6 p.m.

South Laurel (10-6-1) are the six-time defending district champions. The Lady Cards will face Whitley County (6-8-1), a team they defeated 12-0 this season. The Lady Cards went unbeaten in the district, beating Corbin 5-1 and North Laurel, 4-0.

Corbin (13-3-1) takes on North Laurel (7-10-2) following that match. The Lady Redhounds beat the Lady Jaguars earlier in the season, 4-0. The Lady Jaguars come into the match winners of three of their last four matches, and coming off a 0-0 tie at Danville in their season finale. Corbin is 8-1-1 over its last 10 matches.

Tuesday at South Laurel the boys’ 49th soccer district will open with Corbin (10-6-1) taking on Whitley County (8-6-2) at 6, followed by North Laurel (11-4-0) facing South Laurel (4-10-1) at 8. The finals are set for Thursday at 8 p.m.

Corbin, the No. 1 seed, come into the match against Whitley County riding a two-game losing streak. The Redhounds and Colonels didn’t play this season. Whitley County is 7-1-1 and its last nine games.

North Laurel and South Laurel met twice this season, with the Jaguars winning both times, 1-0 and 4-0. The Jaguars have won five games in a row while the Cardinals are 0-8-1 over their last nine games. South is the two-time defending district champion.

The winners and runners up in the district tournaments will advance to the region tournament. The volleyball region will be held at Bell County. The winner of the girls’ district will host the region tournament, while the boys’ region tournament site hasn’t been determined as of press time.
