LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — RUSSELVILLE—North Laurel had a chance to pick up its first win in the First Southern National Bank Classic at Russellville, but that chance slipped away in the fourth quarter. Livingston Central won 49-42 after the Lady Jaguars had led at halftime and going into the fourth quarter.

“We played poor defense the entire game. We attempted multiple defenses and with the lack of energy we played with none were effective,” North Laurel coach Eddie Mahan said.

The Lady Jaguars held a slim 32-31 lead going into the fourth quarter, but were outscored 18-10 in the final frame. Turnovers would allow the Lady Cardinals to open the final margin late. North Laurel turned the ball over 21 times for the game.

“It happened more in the last three minutes. We turned the ball over against just token pressure,” Mahan said.

Livingston Central made 12-of-19 free throws in the fourth quarter with Jennifer Head making six straight. Mahan said some of the fouls were because the Lady Jaguars were trying to catch up.

“Some, but more because we didn’t play defense. We never got in position and locked down,” Mahan said.

North Laurel made 7-of-9 free throws on the night with Livingston Central making 16-of-29 attempts. Turnovers allowed the Lady Cardinals to build the final margin.

Kayla Bruner led North Laurel with 15 points. Hannah Lawson and Makayla Sexton each scored nine points for the Lady Jaguars.

“We did rebound the ball well and Hannah Lawson played well on the offensive end, but it was a game I felt like we were running in mud the entire time,” Mahan said.

North Laurel was scheduled to play Middlesboro in the second round. Middlesboro is the only other 13th Region team in the tournament.

“We will have to play much better defense and have more people step up to compete in a very competitive 13th Region,” Mahan said.
