LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Discussions have begun to move both the boys and girls 13th Region Basketball Tournaments back to The Arena next high school basketball season, which hosted both tournaments in 2010, ’11 and ’12 before they were moved to Harlan County High School this past season.
According to Jackson County High School principal Keith Hayes, it is his school’s turn to host the tournaments in 2014 and he’s hoping to be able host them at The Arena.
“That’s the plan,” he said. “We talked (with the people from The Arena) last week and there are some things that need to be worked out and hopefully those things can be worked out.”
Connie Hunt, general manager of The Arena, did confirm the discussion about the tournaments coming back to The Arena.
“We are in discussion about the 13th Region Tournaments coming back to The Arena,” she said.
Jackson County has a new gymnasium , but Hayes admitted parking and seating would be a problem.
“We just don’t have the parking or the seating to have two regional games in one night,” he said. “So, we want to have it at The Arena. I believe it will be there – there are just a couple of things to work out.
“I’m Jackson County all the way,” he added. “But Jackson County and Harlan County are the extremes when it comes to traveling to the farthest locations. Corbin is more of a central location and it would only make sense to have it at The Arena. So hopefully in a few weeks we can have something worked out.”
