Goals still not coming for South

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — SOMERSET—Two days after dropping a 5-2 decision to arch-rival Somerset, just how would the Pulaski County boys’ soccer team respond with a home date Thursday afternoon against visiting South Laurel?

Just fine, thank you.

Jose Delgado’s goal in the first two minutes of the game gave PC a quick, 1-0 lead and the Maroon defense would take over from there.

A Lane Wilson goal in the first four minutes after the intermission gave Casey Inabnitt’s club a 2-0 advantage, and Pulaski would hold on from there for the 2-0 victory over South Laurel, helping the Maroons improve to 3-1 on the season.

“That loss earlier in the week to Somerset has really gotten us fired up, and it showed in this game tonight,” stated a very happy PC coach.

“We came out and worked very hard yesterday, and then we came out today and played very well,” continued Inabnitt. “Don’t let anybody kid you—it was hot out here and my kids put in a lot of effort on a very hot day. I think when we start playing in some cooler temperatures and get a little better weather, that’s really going to benefit us playing a game like this and getting a very hard win.”

With the loss, South Laurel fell to 1-4 on the season, and head coach Amber Hensley pointed out that the one big problem her young team is still having to deal with is learning how to finish when opportunities present themselves.

“That’s really been our problem all year long,” lamented coach Hensley. “This marks our third straight game that we’ve been held without a goal because we just can’t finish.”

“Like tonight, we didn’t win any 50-50 balls out of the air and we had no communication out there on the field for the entire game,” stated the South Laurel coach. “Honestly, Pulaski likes to play quick and they like to maintain possession by getting the ball out of the air, and we just didn’t do a good job of defending that.”

Anytime a team is coming off an emotional loss to an arch-rival, it’s always important to come out the next game and put that contest in the rear-view mirror.

And, with his goal barely two minutes into the game, that’s exactly what Jose Delgado did for Pulaski County—something that didn’t go unnoticed by the head coach.

“Jose is just a great goal scorer and a great player,” pointed out Inabnitt. “We want to try to get him the ball a little more obviously.”

“Meanwhile, Lane Wilson isn’t going to do a lot of things that show up on the stat sheet, but he’s really running our midfield for us,” remarked Inabnitt. “He’s out there making great tackles and that’s stuff that’s going to go unnoticed by a lot of people, but the coaching staff is seeing that and the team is really benefiting from his effort.”

South Laurel will travel to Pulaski County again Tuesday night, this time to face the Somerset Briar Jumpers.
