South downs North in girls’ tennis

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The South Laurel Lady Cardinals won two matches last week, beating Knox Central, 8-1, on April 17, then downing county rival North Laurel, 6-3, on April 18.

“This girls had another good win against their crosstown rival,” South coach Cindy Taylor said. “There is always a little tension when these two schools play against each other. I continue to be pleased with the play of my team.”

In singles, Neha Rao beat Pooja Kanthawar in the No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 6-0. North’s Caroline Moore took down Kaylyn Collette, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 2 match. South Laurel would win the next two singles matches with Katie Kilburn and Emily Turner picking up wins over Mercedes Laster and Brynna Ryle. North would take the final two singles match as Kendra Smallwood beat Mackenzie Jones and Makara Prichard downed Savannah Durham.

With the match tied 3-3 after singles play, the Lady Cardinals swept all three doubles matches to take the 6-3 win.

South Laurel took all six singles matches against Knox Central and only dropped the No. 3 doubles match to the Lady Panthers.

“I am proud of the way my girls continue to play,” Taylor said of the win over Knox Central. “This was a good win coming off spring break.”
