LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — BARBOURVILLE—Another swim meet, another first place for North Laurel.

Saturday North Laurel, along with South Laurel, Knox Central, Rockcastle County, Barbourville and Oneida Baptist, competed in the Knox Meet at The Robert Stivers II Wellness Center, with North Laurel winning the overall title with 408 points, easily beating second place Rockcastle County’s 310. South Laurel finished in third with 256 points.

Rockcastle won the girls’ event with 218 points, while North Laurel took second (187) and South Laurel, third (138). In the boys’ event, North Laurel won with 221 points and South Laurel took third with 118.

“We recorded 58 individual new events and best times,” North Laurel coach Amy Stenger said. “We had 36 swimmers compete, and 24 scored points for the team.”

South Laurel coach Sarah Wilder was equally as pleased with her team’s performance.

“This meet was a big improvement from the last one,” Wilder said. “Not only did our team as a whole improve in the results, so did all of our swimmers. Almost every swimmer dropped time, some huge increments of time, which is really hard to do in the few weeks they have been practicing. Going into regions, I expect to see even more seconds shaved off and this team get even better.”

The North boys’ 200 Medley Relay (Barrett James, Keller Brown, Jonah Deaton and Aussie Walters) took first with a time of 2:06.88. Those same four took first in the 400 Freestyle Relay with a time of 4:29.81.

Other North swimmers who took first were: girls’ 200 Freestyle Relay team of Megan Mills, Sydney King, Katie Bowling and Megan Bryant with a time of 2:10.17; Aussie Walters, boys; 200 Freestyle, 2:32.93; Barrett James, 100 Backstroke in 1:20.21, 18 seconds ahead of the nearest finisher; Megan Mills, 100 Breaststroke, 1:23.75; and Keller Brown, 100 Breaststroke, 1:10.88.

South Laurel’s Sydney McWhorter was a member of the girls’ 200 Medley Relay team that finished fourth along with Hannah Ford, Hayden Combs and Rhiannon Spradlin. McWhorter also took third in the girls’ 50 Freestyle, fourth in the girls’ 500 Freestyle, and second along with Annie Sharp, Rhiannon Spradlin and Sydney Parker in the girls’ 400 Freestyle Relay. Spradlin also took third in the girls’ 200 Individual Medley. The girls’ 200 Freestyle Relay team of Julie Baker, Hayden Combs, Hannah Ford and Sydney Parker took third place.

For the boys, Ben McDonald had a good day as he took fourth in the boys’ 100 Butterfly and was a member of the boys’ 200 Medley Relay team that finished third along with Corey Robinson, Ruben Soto-Cantalejo and Johnny May, and the boys’ 400 Freestyle Relay team that took second. May, Soto-Cantalejo and Logan Frost were also members of that team.
