Streaking Corbin too much for North

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — CORBIN—Corbin held North Laurel to a season-low 22 points Friday in a 62-22 loss to the Lady Redhounds.  It was the seventh win in the last eight games for Corbin, which was coming off an upset win over Clay County.

“I knew going into the year Corbin was going to be tough,” North Laurel coach Eddie Mahan said. “They are very guard oriented. They only have one true post. Their style of play is much different than most teams in the 13th Region, which leads to some mismatches.”

Mahan thought his team had actually outplayed Corbin in the opening stages of the games. They had rebounded and defended well, but still trailed.

“That’s not a good feeling when you feel like you are outplaying a team and at the same time you are still already down,” Mahan said. ‘’It kind of set a bad offensive tone, which for us is a struggle anyway.”

North Laurel averages about 41 points per game. Among 13th Region teams only Red Bird, OBI, and Middlesboro have scored less this season.

“We just continued on with our offensive struggles, which led to a lot of other problems,” Mahan said.

Eleven players scored in the win for Corbin with Miranda Wilson leading the way with 13 points. The Lady Redhounds connected on 26-of-51 shot attempts while the Lady Jaguars were held to nine-of-36 shooting from the floor. Corbin also forced North Laurel into 21 turnovers.

“Although we were able to break the press, it got us sped up. It got us out of any kind of offensive rhythm, which is what our struggles really bowl down to,” Mahan said.

Corbin jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first quarter and put the game away by outscoring the Lady Jaguars 24-5 during the second quarter while building a commanding 38-8 lead at halftime.

“We came out from the start tonight and played very well,” Corbin coach Jennifer Parsons said. “We were able to force turnovers and score in transition. North is a young team, but they play very hard and are scrappy so, I was glad we controlled the tempo from the start.”

Parsons picked up her 200th career win Friday.

“I have the utmost respect for coach Parsons above just about any coach in the 13th Region. I think she does a tremendous job and gets the most out of her kids,” Mahan said.

The Lady Jaguars game with Knoxville Catholic was cancelled Saturday. They did pick up a home game with Hazard last night.

“If we show up and we play to our ability, it’s a team we should be able to compete with and possibly pull out a win. If we don’t show up or come in mentally ready, then they could run away with it,” Mahan said.
