Hurley has strong spring break outing

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—North Laurel opened play in South Carolina with a strong performance from Zach Hurley on the mound. The Jaguars dropped two of their first three games with errors playing a role.

North Laurel 3, Greensburg (PA) 0

The Jaguars picked up a win behind a strong pitching performance from Zach Hurley. After allowing the first three batters to reach base, Hurley fanned the next three batters to work out of trouble. In all 15 Greensburg batters struck out only one hit after the first inning.

North Laurel opened the scoring with a run in the second inning. Logan Mallory stroked a one-out double and scored. The Jaguars also got walks in the inning to Cole Lewis, Byron Rice, and Jake McWhorter, but would leave the bases loaded.

North Laurel missed another scoring opportunity in the third inning. Zach Hurley doubled and Austin Thompson was hit by a pitch. Lewis walked for the second straight time, but no runs would score.

North Laurel would leave three runners stranded in the fourth and fifth innings before pushing two runs across in the sixth.  McWhorter and Austin Rudder led off with singles. Ethan Maxey was hit by a pitch. Weston Griebel came through with an RBI single. Maxey would also score for a 3-0 North Laurel win.

Thomas Worthington (OH ) 7, North Laurel 2

Thompson started on the mound for North Laurel and ran into trouble early. Worthington scored three runs on three hits in the first inning. They also took advantage of a couple of walks. Two more hits added up to a run in the fourth inning and a 4-0 lead. Worthington added another run in the fifth inning to push the lead to 5-0.

Both North Laurel runs came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Austin Rudder was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Griebel drew a two-out walk. Both runners would score on a triple by Zach Hurley to make it a 5-2 game. There would be no further rally with four of the next six North Laurel batters striking out. Eight Jaguar batters fanned on the night.

Worthington added two insurance runs in the seventh inning with the help of a pair of North Laurel errors.

Loose Olentangy (OH) 8, North Laurel 4

Olentangy jumped on the Jaguars with three runs in the first inning on North Laurel starter Logan Mallory. Olentangy had a pair of hits, but the runs were unearned with the help of three North Laurel areas.  Olentangy added another run in the second inning for a 4-0 lead.

The Jaguars rallied with three runs in the fourth inning.  Maxey, Griebel, and Mallory drew consecutive walks to open the inning. Mallory stroked an RBI single.  Cole Lewis also drove in a run with a fielder’s choice. North Laurel was within 4-3, but would get no closer.

Olentangy would string together three hits for a pair of runs in the fifth inning with Cole Lewis on the mound for North Laurel.

North Laurel made it a 6-4 game Hurley was hit by a pitch and scored in the sixth inning. The run scored on a fielder’s choice by Thompson.

Olentangy wrapped up the scoring with a pair of runs in the seventh inning on three hits.
