Hyde homers in South Laurel’s win

Lady Cards hold on to beat Garrard County, 6-5

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — It was one of those games that worried South Laurel coach James Burns.

His team had just come off a 1-0 loss at No. 5 Scott County last Thursday and were preparing to leave for spring break on Saturday. But in-between they played host to Garrard County, and came away with a thrilling 6-5 win.

“It was a trap game for us,” Burns said. “This was a tough game to get ready for.”

The Lady Cards (4-1) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to two Garrard County errors. The Lady Golden Lions tied the game in the top of the second.

South Laurel then took a 3-1 lead thanks to an error by Garrard County. With Bailey Miller on base, Brittany Vandeventer singled to right, where the ball was misplayed. Miller scored on the play, as did Vandeventer.

After Garrard County cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth, Amber Hyde smacked her third home run of the season in the bottom of the inning to give South a 5-2 cushion. The Lady Cards would add another run before Garrard County rallied to score three runs in the final two innings, but Hagan Burns came in to relieve Megan Smith and closed out the Lady Golden Lions to pick up the save.

“We didn’t hit the ball really well,” Burns said. “They (Garrard County) have got some really good pitchers, but our defense was solid and we were able to get the win. This was a good win for us.”

South Laurel in South Carolina

The Lady Cards played their first game in the Ripken Experience in South Carolina Monday, falling to Carolina Forest (SC), 13-2.

South Laurel played Horseheads (NY) on Tuesday and will face Bellbrook (OH) today, then wrap-up its spring break with a game against Liverpool (NY) on Thursday.
