LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Another stout performance by the defense and three touchdown passes carried North Middle eighth grade to a 22-0 win over Clay County Tuesday. The Jaguars first round conference tournament win moves them into the second round against a tough Corbin team.

“The defense played well,” North Middle coach Dusty Carloftis said. “Offensively we didn’t get the good runs I wanted as far as moving the chains. We did in the first quarter, but other than that we had to throw it a lot.”

Passing accounted for all three touchdowns with quarterback Cole McWhorter connecting with Nick Broughton for all three scores.

“It was about the same number we usually throw, but they were good balls and good catches,” Carloftis said.

Once Broughton caught the ball he had the speed to outrun the Tigers’ defense.

The first touchdown was a 25-yard pass from McWhorter to Broughton. Jose Rodriguez ran for the conversion and an 8-0 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter it was McWhorter to Broughton on a 33-yard pass. A pass for the two-point conversion failed as North Middle took a 14-0 lead into the half.

The Jaguars sealed the win with another 33-yard pass from Broughton to McWhorter with 5:30 to play. Justin Moore ran for the two-point conversion busting across the goal line with strong second effort.

“We came out a little flat, probably after that big win last week,” Carloftis said.

North Middle wrapped up a perfect regular season last week with a win over Corbin. They didn’t know much about Clay County, but the Jaguars did know if they won they would play Corbin again.

The Jaguars rematch with Corbin will be today at North Middle. It will be the second game of a doubleheader with game time approximately 8 p.m.

Although it is for the conference championship, the Jaguars already have a spot secured in the state playoffs. Two years ago North Middle finished the regular season unbeaten, but lost to Meece in the conference championship game The last time North Middle won a conference championship was in 2006.
