Carson named 13th Region POY

Harris named 13th Region Coach of the Year

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — North Laurel’s Marcus Carson was named the 13th Region Player of the Year at Friday’s 13th Region tournament meeting.

Carson, who will play college baseball at Kentucky, beat out South Laurel’s Alex Sears and Trent Abner, and Whitley County’s Alex Rose for the honor, which was voted on by coaches present at the meeting.

Carson, along with Sears and Harlan County’s Tyler Boggs, were nominated for all-state consideration, and Carson and Sears were named to the Senior All-Stars for the East, with Rose and Boggs being named alternates.

Coach of the Year honors went to South Laurel’s Wynn Harris, while Knox Central’s Chris Hubbard was named Assistant Coach of the Year.

Clay County’s Tyler Allen and Corbin’s Kevin Goins were named to the Junior All Stars, with Scotty Bailey of Harlan County, Taylor Combs of Corbin and Tanner Moore of Barbourville being named alternates. For sophomores, Jake Brock of Middlesboro and Zach Hurley of North Laurel were named, with Corbin’s Andrew Jones and South Laurel’s Daniel Neal being named alternates.

A lengthy discussion was held on the rotation of the region tournament. Corbin coach Rob Ledington questioned why Harlan County was inserted into next year’s slot instead of being put at the end of the rotation. He noted that no vote was taken last year when Harlan County was inserted into the rotation.

“We’ve set a precedent that every school that has a new field will be put into the rotation instead of at the end of it,” Ledington said. For the record, Ledington has stated that he would like to see the region tournament moved to a neutral location, like Union College.

Ledington put forth a motion that they use the same rotation they have now for fields that meet KHSAA standards, that new fields be put at the end of the rotation, and that whatever school is scheduled to host the tournament has the option to take it to a neutral site. The motion was seconded by North Laurel, but a vote never took place and the current rotation schedule was to be sent in to the KHSAA, with Harlan County scheduled to host it next  year, followed by Corbin, Lynn Camp, North Laurel, Whitley County and Middlesboro.
