LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
WILLIAMSBURG—South Laurel completed a perfect 6-0 district schedule with a 14-6 win over Whitley County Tuesday night.
“We are starting to put stuff together and figure things out, both as a team and as individual players,” coach Wynn Harris said. “They are starting to understand the little things that make them better. They had that ‘punch the time clock’ approach that I love for teams to have and they went to work. When a team has that mentality, they start to play as a unit and that’s a great thing.”
Stephen Simpson started the game for South and got the Cardinals into the fourth inning. Austin Vigeant came in and pitched through the sixth, and Alex Sears made a return to the mound and pitched the seventh inning.
“We got good pitching from the three guys we ran out there,” Harris said. “Stephen gives us a boost. Most days he is behind the plate and last night he was in front. Sometimes that’s tough for a guy to do. When you catch everyday and then you are asked to pitch, it takes some transition. Austin wasn’t as sharp as I have seen him, but he’s definitely a guy that is going to get some more innings down the road. We are liking the way he is throwing. It was a good feeling to have Sears come in and we felt pretty confident he was going to close the door.”
Harris said his team continued to hit the ball well and run the bases aggressively.
“Our offense has been the factor of our game that has continuously showed up this year,” Harris said. “Now our focus has to be on preparation for the post season. I have told the team a couple of times that once the in-season district games were over, it would be preseason for the post season.”
The Cardinals will host North Laurel tonight and travel to take on Somerset on Saturday.
