Carson, Griebel lead Jags past Defenders

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The combination of Marcus Carson’s hitting and Weston Griebel’s pitching lifted North Laurel to a 5-3 win over visiting Bryan Station Thursday.

Carson went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs, while Griebel threw five strong innings as the Jaguars improved to 3-2 on the season. Another key was the fact that the Jaguars didn’t commit an error against the Defenders, something that has plagued North Laurel through the first few games.

“We’ve just been too nervous,” coach Darren McWhorter said. “I’ve told them to calm down and just make the play. Catch and throw. That’s all we need to do and we did that tonight.”

Carson’s two-run triple in the second inning gave North Laurel a 3-0 lead.

“Marcus had a great game today,” McWhorter said. “He was perfect at the plate and drove in three runs. He had a single, double and triple. He did a great job for us today.”

McWhorter was also thrilled with eighth-grader Griebel’s performance on the mound.

“Weston pitched great,” McWhorter said. “He threw lights out.” Carson came in to relieve Griebel and pitched the final two innings.
