LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
South Laurel’s Neha Rao continued her winning ways Wednesday, defeating North Laurel’s Pooja Kanthawar, 8-2, in the No. 1 girls’ singles match.
But that was just about the only bright spot for both South Laurel teams, as the Lady Jaguars beat the Lady Cardinals, 7-2, while the Jaguars rolled over the Cardinals in boys’ action, 9-0.
“Neha is the dominant favorite in our region, and Pooja started out well against her,” North Laurel coach Bobby Smith said. “But Neha closed out the match well and was too much in the end.”
Rao was also a part of the only other win for the Lady Cards when she teamed with Emily Turner to win the No. 1 doubles match over Kanthawar and Caroline Moore, 8-1. North did win the next two doubles match, as Kendra Smallwood and Brynna Ryle beat Makenzie Jones and Savannah Durham, 8-5, while Makara Prichard and Taylor Hubbard downed Hannah Amburgey and Mahala Watts, 8-0.
“I was disappointed in the play of our top two doubles teams, but hopefully we’ll pick it back up in time for several big matches next week leading up to our tournament,” Smith said. “Overall, though, it’s always good to pick up a win against your cross-town school and we’re pleased to improve our record to 7-2.”
The boys had no trouble with South Laurel, blanking the Cardinals, 9-0.
“South is rebuilding and we had too much depth for them,” Smith said. “I was impressed with the Tonkel kid—he gave Dakota (Boggs) all he wanted. He has potential to be a really good player in time. The lineup as a whole took care of business and I was pleased overall. Improving to 8-2 and winning against South is a good way to head into our tournament this weekend.” North Laurel played host to the North Laurel Boys’ Tennis Classic on Saturday.
Arjun Kanthawar downed Austin Phelps in the No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 6-0. Tonkel won the first set over Boggs, 6-4, but Boggs came back to win the next two and the match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
North is scheduled to host Williamsburg in girls’ action tonight, while the South girls will host the Lady Yellowjackets Tuesday.
