LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — PRESTONSBURG—North Laurel got a great pitching performance from Blaine Miller and Colby Howard, but still fell to Campbellsville 1-0 in the opening round of the 11-year-old Little League State Tournament in Prestonsburg on Saturday.

“It was just one of those games where both pitchers were doing exactly what they were supposed to do,” North Laurel coach Jason Vanhook said.

That would also be the reason both stat lines looked almost the same. Both teams played error-free and both teams left three runners on base. Campbellsville out-hit North Laurel 4-3.

“We didn’t hit the ball the way we should, but their pitching had a lot to do with that,” Vanhook said.

North Laurel was scheduled to play Prestonsburg Monday night, but rain forced the game to be moved to Tuesday. Vanhook expects another close game.

“You don’t get to the state tournament by being shabby,” he said.

The delay does allow both Miller and Howard to be eligible to pitch if needed.

“Our pitching has been good. Our defense has been good. Out bats, one day they show up and one day they don’t,” Vanhook said.

North Laurel has already seen Prestonsburg in a tournament at South London. Vanhook also got a chance to scout them in their first state tournament game. Prestonsburg won its first round game with Morgan County 12-0.
