LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — ORLANDO, FLA—North Laurel lost a tight game to Mars (Pa.) 62-54 in the first round of The Rock Holiday Classic at Windmere Prep, (Fla.). The Jaguars trailed by three or four points much of the game before the Fightin’ Planets opened a bit of breathing room at the end.

“We played decent. We were down three at halftime,” North Laurel coach Brad Sizemore said. “We just played OK. We should have won to tell you the truth. We were better than them. We just couldn’t get going.”

A balanced Mars attack was led by Mitchell Buzzard and Zach May with 13 points each. Josh Goetz was also in double figures with 11 points.

“Goetz was 6-foot-8. (Matt)  Getsy was about 6-foot-4. They had a bunch of guys that shot the ball really well,” Sizemore said.

Mars made eight three-pointers. The Jaguars know little about the teams they will play in Florida and have to make adjustments from what they learn during the game. Sizemore knew little more than the Fightin’ Planets were from the Philadelphia area.

“It was a tight game they just ended up pulling away from us a little bit at the end down three or four most of the game and just couldn’t get over hump,” Sizemore said. “Turnovers hurt us quite a bit. We turned the ball over more than we had been.”

North Laurel was led by Marcus Carson with 14 points and Jake Allen with 12. The Jaguars were scheduled to play Etowah, Ga., in the second round. Etowah lost to host Windmere Prep in their first round game despite scoring 97 points.
