Yantz drives in two in North’s 4-1 win over M’boro

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — MIDDLESBORO—Eighth-grader Kailin Yantz singled and tripled to drive in two runs, and Megan Baldwin allowed just one unearned run as the North Laurel Lady Jaguars handed Middlesboro a 4-1 loss.

It was actually Middlesboro (5-8) that got on the board first in the bottom of the first when Megan Prater led off with a base hit to left. She stole second and advanced to third on a fly out. She then scored on an error for the 1-0 lead.

After retiring the first six batter she faced, Middlesboro pitcher Lindsay Durham ran into trouble in the third. Farris Strong led things of with a double, advanced to third on a grounder by Mikayla Vires, then scored on a groundout by McKenzie Mills. Sidney Herrell singled, stole second and scored when Vanessa Smith reached on an error for a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Jaguars (12-4) added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Baldwin walked, Blake Johnson singled, then Yantz hit an RBI single to make it 3-1. The fourth run came in the bottom of the sixth as Baldwin singled and scored on an RBI triple by Yantz.

Baldwin allowed the one run on six hits while striking out seven and didn’t walk a batter. Durham, in taking the loss, allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked two.

North Laurel traveled to play in the Assumption Crusade for Children over the weekend. They faced Woodford County on Friday and Bethlehem and North Bullitt on Saturday. The Lady Jaguars will host Whitley County Tuesday.
