LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — CORBIN—When Preslie Baker drained a three at the 3:13 mark of the first quarter, it gave the South Laurel Lady Cardinals a 7-6 lead over Harlan in the third place game of the Cumberland Falls Invitational Saturday at Corbin.

That would be the last lead of the game South would enjoy. Harlan ended the first quarter with a 13-1 run, then rolled to the 78-42 win.

“We came out with a lot of energy and looked like we were ready to play,” South Laurel coach Konnie Snyder said. “But we couldn’t keep it up and could never get in the flow of game.”

During that 13-1 run Jourdin Ledford nailed three three-pointers, the last one gave the Lady Dragons a 19-8 lead after one. She would finish with a game-high 25 points.

“We had a hard time finding her,” Snyder said of Ledford.

Harlan continued to build on its lead throughout the second quarter and led handily at the half, 36-15.

A 15-2 run to open the third quarter really put the game on ice, as the lead grew to 51-17. South wouldn’t hit 20 points until the 3:47 mark when Morgan Madden scored underneath. Harlan led 60-27 going into the fourth quarter.

The final stanza saw the South Laurel offense pick up a little, scoring 15 points, including five from Shelby Davis, who led South with 13 points, the only Lady Cardinal to finish in double figures. Jordan Brock added 20 points for Harlan.

For the game, South shot 26 percent from the field and 44 percent from the line, while the Lady Dragons shot 41 percent and 73 percent respectively.

“We lost a lot of our intensity and didn’t finish a lot of shots,” Snyder said. “We also had trouble with transition defense.”

Brittany Vandeventer, who reinjured her shoulder in the loss, was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lady Cards were scheduled to host Whitley County Tuesday night, a team that just beat them in the Cumberland Falls Invitational.
