Smith holds 5 shot lead after first round; Sharpe 3rd, Moore tied for 6th

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Abby Smith of the Frankfort Country Club carded a first round 4-under-par 69 to take a 5 stroke lead into the second round of the 87th Women’s Kentucky State Golf Amateur, being held at Crooked Creek Golf Club.

Smith was the only player to come in under par after the 18 hole stroke play qualifying on Monday.

Grace Rose, representing High Point Golf Club, sat in second after the first day with a 1-over-par 74. Crooked Creek’s Becky Sharpe was tied for third with a 2-over-par 75. She was even after the first nine holes (37), but shot two over on the back nine thanks to bogeys on 11, 16 and 17. She was able to get one of those strokes back with a birdie on 14.

Caroline Moore, of London Country Club, was tied for sixth with after shooting a 3-over-par 76. She struggled on the first nine with a double bogey on 5 and a bogey on 9, but was able to birdie No. 3 as she made the turn at 2 over. On the back nine Moore bogeyed 11 and 12 but came back with a birdie on 16.

Three more golfers participating from the London Country Club were Katie Bowling (tied for 23rd at 10 over 83), Shirley Allen (44th, 23 over 96) and Janet French (tied for 45th, 24 over 97).

The first round match play was held Tuesday, with the second round match play and first round consolation play scheduled for today. Thursday will see the third round match play (semi-final flights 1-5), second round consolation match play, and semifinal of the championship flight) with the tournament wrapping up on Friday with the finals of all flights teeing off at 8 a.m. and the Women’s State Amateur Championship Match starting at 9:45 a.m.
