Moore thrilled with North’s performance at state

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A ninth place team finish, along with Caroline Moore taking seventh, made North Laurel’s trip to the girls’ state golf tournament memorable.

“I am thrilled for the girls,” coach Karen Moore said. “They came out of the strong ninth region to make it to the state tournament. Once we were there, the weather cut our practice round to only the front nine.” Heavy rains in Bowling Green on Monday played havoc with practice rounds.

“Going into Tuesday three of the girls had never played the back nine before,” Moore said.

Coming into the tournament, North’s region scores placed the Lady Jaguars 12th out of 22 teams.

“We played fine on the first day considering the cold weather and the wet conditions of the course,” Moore said. “At one point I was pleased with how the team performed, especially for our first time there. But as the day went on and the other team scores came in we were thrilled to find out that we had made the cut.”

Monday and Tuesday’s dismal weather gave way to a beautiful Wednesday for the final round of the tournament.

“The weather on Wednesday was perfect for golf and now all of us had at least played the whole course,” Moore said. “Wednesday the team cut their score by 12 strokes. Caitlin Gibson had her best round of the season shooting 100. After we finished I knew our scores would probably keep us around that 10-11th position. But at the end of the day we had finished in ninth place. Pretty good showing for our first time there.”

Caroline Moore found herself in the Top 10 at the end of tournament with a tie for seventh place.

“Caroline played fine on her first round, finishing tied for 10th, but knew she had some work to do for her second round,” Moore said. “She came our very strong and determined Wednesday morning. She started on the back nine. She played it even par with one bogey and one birdie. She then played the front nine 2 over, with a final score of 74. Her two-round total was 153, and she ended up tied for seventh place. It was a tough three days, dealing with the weather and trying to stay focused for 5-plus hours is not easy. I am very proud of these girls.”
