LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
A game that started well didn’t end well for the North Laurel Blue 9-10 All Stars. Leading 3-0 after 2 1⁄2 innings, the wheels fell off in the fourth inning as Corbin White won 13-3. The loss eliminated North Laurel from the Area 2 Tournament.
North Laurel scored in each of the first two innings and was also getting strong pitching from Chase Keen. Keen held Corbin hitless the first two innings.
North Laurel opened the game with Toby Fields and Augie Storm drawing walks. With one out, John McCowan ripped a shot that was too hot for the third baseman to handle. Fields scored on McCowan’s hit and Storm scored on a groundout by Kylee Elza.
In the second inning, Keen singled with one out and scored on a groundout by Conner Helton for a 3-0 lead.
North Laurel had another chance to add to the lead when Storm and Will Hellard singled to open the third inning. Cody Cox struck out the next three batters to work out of the inning.
The Corbin bats still seemed to be quiet when the first two batters were retired in the third inning. Quinn Botner singled, stole two bases, and scored on a throwing error. Luke Ledington and Cody Cox walked. Both would score on a triple by Peyton Addison to tie the game. Corbin took its first lead when Jacob Baker’s infield single allowed Addison to score.
It was all Corbin in the fourth inning with the first seven runners reaching base. There was still just one out when Josh Gilbert crossed the plate with the ninth run of the inning to end the game. Corbin had eight hits in the fourth inning, including a two-run double by Botner.
The loss eliminated North Laurel from the tournament. North Laurel beat the Corbin Red team in the first round 15-3 before falling to South London 11-1.
