LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
North Laurel and South Hardin will meet in the winner’s bracket finals of the 9-10 Girls State Tournament.
The game was scheduled for Wednesday before being washed out by rain.
North Laurel advanced with a 13-1 win over Morgan County in its second-round game Tuesday. South Hardin needed extra innings to slide past North Oldham.
“They’re a good team. They’ve got good pitching,” North Laurel coach Jon Sizemore said of South Hardin.
North Laurel’s win over Morgan County could have been easier, but only if they had wanted it to be. There was no drama after North Laurel sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored eight runs.
The first inning included singles by Maddie Dagley, Maylee Philpot, and Tia Gambrel. Philpot drove in a pair of runs with her hit. North Laurel also drew five walks and had one hit batter in the inning.
Daria Casey struck out all three batters she faced in the bottom of the second.
North Laurel went to work again with a walk to asey followed by hits for Taylor Jones and Gambrel. North Laurel would leave the bases loaded after intentionally sending runners early to make outs.
North Laurel tacked on three more runs in the third inning to make it an 11-0 game. Kambrie Collier and Emma Thompson walked. Emma Smith and Haven Houston each singled as North Laurel tallied seven hits in three innings. It was more than they had in the win over Ashland America a night earlier.
After Morgan County went in order for the third straight inning, the game was delayed as a strong thunderstorm moved over North Little League field. Morgan County was able to push one run across after the rain delay.
