North Laurel host first volleyball camp

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The volleyball players that attended North Laurel’s volleyball camp Saturday can claim a piece of history. They are members of the first volleyball camp held by the Lady Jaguars.

The reason for coach Ali Ray to hold a camp are twofold. She wanted to raise money for the volleyball team and give young, inexperienced players a better understanding of the game.

“I just felt like it was necessary. Now that we have middle school volleyball there were a lot of middle school girls that have never played. I thought the camp would be a good way to introduce it to them so they will be ready for tryouts in the spring,” Ray said.

Although some of the campers played in middle school last year, others had never played volleyball before. Ray hopes if North Laurel continues to hold the camps that word will spread and attendance will grow.

“We had 11 girls so I was happy with that. I was hoping for more, but it’s the end of summer and a lot of people were on vacation,” Ray said.

The campers ranged in age from fourth grade through ninth grade. Most that attended Saturday were 10 to 13 years old.

Members of the current North Laurel volleyball team worked with the campers to teach them basic volleyball fundamentals such as setting the ball and serving.

“It’s very basic. We just try to teach them what volleyball is really,” Ray said.
