LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Taylor Arthur and Emily Clonce both recorded double-doubles to make their Senior Night memorable as South Laurel downed Rockcastle County, 46-40.
Arthur had 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Clonce added 13 and 10.
“It was nice to come out and get a win,” South Laurel coach Konnie Snyder said. “We needed to play well. There’s a lot of emotion on a night like this. Our seniors played well.” This was the last time Arthur, Clonce, C.J. Johnson and Heather Jackson would play in South Laurel’s gym.
South (13-13) came out strong, taking a 10-0 lead behind four points from both Arthur and Clonce. Rockcastle County (16-11) struggled out of the game, missing its first 10 shots from the field. In fact, the Lady Rockets could manage only two free throws by Emily Miller in the first seven minutes of action. Their first field goal came off a jumper by Michela Hunter with 16. 3 seconds left as South led after one, 12-4.
Rockcastle then used a 10-1 run midway through the second quarter to get back into the game and tie things up at the half, 17-17.
“We lost a little bit midway through the second quarter,” Snyder said. “We came in at the half, regrouped, got a few steals, took the lead and never relinquished it.”
Back-to-back baskets by Clonce and Arthur to open the third quarter gave South Laurel a 21-17 lead. After Rockcastle cut it to 21-19, the Lady Cards answered with a 12-4 run to end the third and take a 33-23 lead into the fourth quarter.
Free throws from Arthur and Clonce pushed the lead to 13, 38-25, early in the fourth. Rockcastle used a 6-0 run late in the game to cut the lead to 42-37, at the 1:08 mark. Clonce then sank two free throws with one minute left to make it 44-37. After an Arthur basket off an offensive rebound, Rockcastle’s Hunter made two free throws with 10 seconds left, but it was too little, too late, as South Laurel held on for the 46-40 win.
“I thought we handled their press tonight,” Snyder said. “We took care of the ball made more our free throws at the end when we needed to.”
The Lady Cardinals will now face Whitley County in the opening round of the girls’ 50th District Tournament Tuesday night in Williamsburg.
“I hope we can carry this momentum over into that game,” Snyder said.
