King believes South boys can contend in this year’s golf region

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — After its first two tournaments of the new golf season, South Laurel coach Steve King is pleased with the fast start of his team.

“We are off to a great start this season,” King said. “In our first outing at Estill County we made a good showing but finished just out of the trophies. Two days later we hosted our tournament and played like we should winning it. Last year we struggled at home and let some matches and our tournament slip away. This year we played, and scored, like we should have.”

The Cards will be led this season by Zach Royster and Trey Martin. Royster won the South Laurel Invitational, shooting a 75 to finish with the third lowest round of the tournament. Martin shot and 81, as did Tad Barton. Tanner Sibert and Tucker Martin will also be key players for the Cardinals this year.

“Each of those guys are capable of posting better scores but we all played good enough,” King said. “I’m proud of each of my players. They all had bad holes during their rounds but had the mental toughness to bounce back and still post a good scored. Often times a player will let that get to them and ruin the day.”

Last year South Laurel finished fourth in the 10th Region golf tournament, as only the top two teams advance to start. Then only the top two individuals, not on a qualifying team, also advance. King likes his team’s chances of qualifying this year.

“I believe we have a good chance at being one of those two teams or having qualifying individuals if we can build on this start and keep improving.”

Vince Holcomb, Houston Robinson, Logan Belt, Plinio Tuta, Trevor Barker, Chase Bargo and Seth McCowan are also members of this year’s team.
